Dr. Zibin Guo, currently a professor of medical anthropology at the University of Tennessee Chattanooga, is the founder and driving force behind the Chattanooga Tai Ji Community.

Since 2005, Dr. Guo has been working with the Beijing Paralympic Committee and the China Federation for People with Disability to promote wheelchair Tai Ji Quan.  On September 5, 2008 Dr. Guo’s wheelchair Tai Ji Quan form was premiered at the Paralympics festivities in Beijing.  Dr. Guo’s form of wheelchair Tai Ji Quan has since been recognized as the standard form of wheelchair Tai Ji Quan promoted throughout China.

The wheelchair/adaptive Tai Chi program Dr. Guo developed has been recognized by many medical/rehab and disability communities in the world.  Since 2016, with support from the Adaptive Sports Grant program of the USVA, Dr. Guo has implemented a Wheelchair/Adaptive Tai Chi for Veterans instructor training program across the country. As of March 2020, this training program has provided instructor training to nearly 500 VA healthcare providers at more than 50 VA Medical Centers/facilities across the United States and territory.

During the early 1980s and before moving to the United States in 1986, Dr. Guo was also an instructor with the Nanjing Martial Arts team and instructed the Sha Shou team at the Jiangsu Police Academy.

In 1994, after he obtained his Ph.D. degree in medical anthropology from the University of Connecticut, Dr. Guo accepted a fellow appointment and later a lecturer appointment at Harvard Medical School researching cross-cultural mental health.  While he was in Boston, he also served as dean of clinical studies at the New England School of Acupuncture.

Dr. Guo began his martial arts career at the age of eight. He first studied Chinese external martial arts with grandmaster Fan Xuexi. Later, he studied Chen Style Tai Ji Quan and Chen style Tai Ji sword with grandmaster Xue Gongwei, Kan Gui-Xiang and Song Jinlong all of whom were students of Chen Zhao-Kui. He also studied the formless push hand style with grandmaster Wei Shuren.

After graduating from Nanjing University in 1982, he was appointed as an assistant professor in Chinese martial arts with the department of physical education at Nanjing University, where he began to teach Chinese internal & external martial arts, including both theory and methods, while he continued to study and practice Chinese internal martial arts, including Xing Yi and Ba Gua.
